The only wiki I had ever heard of before this class was Wikipedia, but now I know that there are all sorts of wikis out there where information is added and anyone can contribute to a general or specific aspect of a topic. In this class we got to make a wiki with groups of classmates. I was in a group with soon to be English teachers and a World language teacher. We each contributed different useful websites that we will potentially use in our classrooms someday. Other people from our class and the other 486 classes also added their areas of expertise to their wikis. As an ESL teacher, I'm really glad that I have access to all of these other content area wikis. I will not only be teaching aspects of the English language but I will mainly be incorporating content area topics in my classroom. Having access to useful science, math, or elementary education website links will prove useful as I'm planning lessons and looking to see what my students are learning in their general education classes. Finding ESL websites for my part of the wiki that had all of the "bells and whistles" of say, a website for a 3rd graders wasn't that easy. I mainly found sites that ESL teachers can use for lesson planning ideas, and found a few websites with some English type language games/activities. However, the general education websites that are available out there can be adapted for the ESL classroom. I hope to someday find a wiki comprised of ESL teachers in order to garner what advice and ideas they can give me for my own classroom.
